Introduction

**Klixon (or similar bimetallic thermal switches)** offer the simplest, most basic form of over-temperature protection. This sensor contains a bimetallic strip that snaps open when a set temperature is reached, breaking the control circuit. Once the motor cools, the strip snaps closed, allowing the motor to be restarted. These sensors are commonly used in smaller industrial and residential motors. For explosion-proof applications, the Klixon switch must be placed in a non-hazardous area, or the switch itself must be intrinsically safe (Ex i) or contained within an Ex d enclosure to prevent its switching action from becoming an ignition source.
